Education Savings

Collect every grant dollar on offer for your kids.

The government adds money to every RESP that’s set up properly. A lot of families never collect all of it. This makes sure yours does.

Who This Is For

Sound familiar?

  • You have a child or grandchild, or one on the way.
  • You opened an RESP years ago and aren’t sure you’ve been getting the full grant.
  • You missed a few years and want to know whether you can catch up.
What It Is

Savings with the government chipping in.

An RESP is a savings account for a child’s education after high school. You put money in, the government adds a grant on top, and it all grows tax-sheltered until it’s needed.

The grant $500 per child, per year

The government adds 20% on the first $2,500 you put in each year.

The lifetime limit $7,200 per child

The most grant one child can receive. Missed years can be caught up, up to $1,000 a year.

Canada Learning Bond $2,000 up to, per child

For eligible lower-income families, paid into the RESP with no contribution needed.

2026 federal program rules. Ontario doesn’t add a provincial grant.

Common Questions

Questions people ask.

What if I’ve missed years?

Unused grant room carries forward. You can catch up by putting in more than $2,500 in a year: the grant is paid on up to $5,000 a year, for a maximum of $1,000 in grant each year, until the $7,200 lifetime limit.

When does the grant stop?

It can be paid until the end of the year the child turns 17. There are extra conditions at 16 and 17, so it’s best to start well before then.

What if my child doesn’t go to school after high school?

Your contributions come back to you. The grants go back to the government. The growth has its own rules, and we’d go through your options if it ever came up.

Can grandparents open one?

Yes. Anyone can open an RESP for a child, and grandparents often do. It’s worth coordinating with the parents so the family doesn’t miss grant or go over the limits.

Do I need my child’s SIN?

Yes. The grant is only paid once the child has a Social Insurance Number and is named on the plan.

Does Ontario add its own grant?

No. Some provinces do, but Ontario doesn’t. Here, the federal grant and, for eligible families, the Canada Learning Bond are what’s on offer.

Grant amounts are 2026 federal program rules. Investments held inside an RESP can go up and down in value.
