Business Owners

You built it. Now make sure it holds without you.

Most small businesses still depend on the owner being in the room. This is about what keeps the business, your partners, your staff and your family standing if you’re not.

In plain words: if something happened to you, would the business and your family be okay? We make sure they would.

Owner’s Pay & Protection Session: 90 minutes, $450 flat, by phone or video. Business owners can book it directly.

Money in the Corporation

Move money out of your corporation without overpaying tax.

Retained earnings, salary, dividends and corporate-owned coverage all interact. The order you use them in decides how much reaches your family.

In plain words: your company has money in it. We work out the cheapest way to get it to you and your family.

Corporate surplus Taxed twice in the company, then to you

Money sitting in a corporation is taxed again on the way out. The order you take it out in matters.

Commercial cleaning

More sitting inside the corporation than anyone had ever properly explained to him — and no plan for moving any of it out.

Described in general terms; no client is identified and no result is implied. Tax treatment depends on your situation. We work alongside your accountant on anything corporate. Strategies discussed may involve life insurance products.

Who This Is For

Sound familiar?

  • You’re incorporated, or you have partners, staff or contracts that depend on you.
  • You’ve personally guaranteed a loan or a lease.
  • You and your partners have never put a funded agreement in writing.
What It Is

The money side of a few hard questions.

Who runs things if you can’t, how a partner gets bought out, how you pay yourself, and what happens to what’s built up inside the corporation. Four tools cover most of it.

Key person coverage

If the business loses you

Pays the business if you or another key person dies or is seriously ill, to cover lost revenue, repay loans or hire help while it recovers.

Buy-sell funding

If a partner dies

Your lawyer writes the agreement; insurance provides the money. A partner’s family is paid a fair price, and the business stays with the people running it.

Owner income protection

If you can’t work

Disability coverage keeps your personal income coming. Overhead expense coverage keeps the business’s bills paid while you recover.

Inside the corporation

What you’ve built up

Investments and insurance owned by the corporation can be part of how money eventually moves to you and your family. We plan it with your accountant.

Three Questions

Every owner should be able to answer these.

  • If I couldn’t work for six months, who pays the business’s bills, and who pays me?
  • If my partner died tomorrow, where would the money come from to buy their shares?
  • If I died, what would my signature on the loan or the lease mean for my family?

Common Questions

Questions owners ask.

What is key person insurance?

Coverage the business owns on someone it can’t easily replace, often the owner. If that person dies or becomes seriously ill, the business receives the money to steady itself: cover lost revenue, repay loans or bring in help.

How is a buy-sell agreement funded?

Usually with life insurance on each owner. If one dies, the policy pays out, and that money buys their shares from their estate at the agreed price. Your lawyer drafts the agreement; I help make sure the money is there.

Can my corporation own the policy?

Often, yes, and it’s common. How it’s owned and who’s named changes the tax results, so we plan it together with your accountant.

What is overhead expense insurance?

It pays the business’s fixed costs, like rent, staff and utilities, while you’re disabled and can’t work, so there’s still a business to come back to.

Do you work with my accountant and lawyer?

Yes, and I’d rather. The best plans for owners are the ones all their advisors have looked at together.

Coverage is subject to eligibility and underwriting. Tax treatment depends on your situation; speak with your accountant before making decisions about coverage owned by a corporation.
