What a funeral costs in Ontario.

Most families find out the week it happens. Here are the usual ranges, what they include, and the ways people pay, so nobody has to guess.

Example ranges from Ontario funeral pricing guides, 2026
$9,000–$15,000
A traditional funeral and burial in Ontario.
$14,500–$20,000
The same, in Toronto and the GTA.
$1,500–$4,000
A simple cremation with no service.

What goes into the cost

The total is made of several separate choices, and each one moves the number:

  • The funeral home’s services: care of the body, paperwork, staff and facilities.
  • A casket or an urn.
  • A burial plot and opening the grave, or cremation.
  • A headstone or marker.
  • The service itself, flowers, and any gathering afterwards.

The bills that follow

The funeral is rarely the only bill. There’s often a last phone bill, a credit card balance, family flying in, and the gathering afterwards. It adds up quickly, and it lands on whoever is left organizing it.

Help that’s available

If the person paid into the Canada Pension Plan, their estate may receive a one-time CPP death benefit of up to $2,500. It helps, but it covers only part of a typical funeral, and it isn’t paid the week the bills arrive.

Ontario’s probate tax

What passes through an estate in Ontario can face the Estate Administration Tax: nothing on the first $50,000, then $15 for every $1,000 above that, about 1.5%. The estate can also take months to settle, which is why families often end up paying funeral costs themselves first.

The ways families pay

Savings

Simple, if the money is there and someone can reach it quickly. Money in the person’s own name may be tied up until the estate is settled.

A prepaid funeral plan

Arranged directly with a funeral home, covering the specific services chosen. In Ontario these are regulated by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario.

Final expense coverage

A smaller life insurance policy meant for the funeral and the bills that follow. Its death benefit is paid tax-free to your beneficiaries, so it doesn’t wait for the estate. What you’re asked depends on the product: some options use health questions rather than a full exam, and the insurer’s underwriting decides the final terms.

Funeral cost ranges are examples from Ontario funeral pricing guides, 2026. Prices vary greatly between providers and communities and with the services chosen, so ask providers for itemized prices (Bereavement Authority of Ontario). General information, not legal or tax advice.
